Our main objective in teaching martial arts to children is to build strong character, self-confidence and moral values.
It is well documented that martial arts helps to strengthen one’s personal focus and concentration skills, which is
especially necessary in the development of today’s youth. In fact, many doctors recommend martial arts to parents for
this reason as well as for muscular development in their children. Our childrens’ classes consist primarily of
instruction in Kenpo, along with some kickboxing basics. Focus and concentration is always emphasized in the practice
of all techniques in our Kenpo classes. Much of what we teach requires attentive visualization by students in order
to be done correctly, which further aids in the development of their focus and concentration. Furthermore, Kenpo’s
belt ranking system is designed in a way that students are constantly striving to reach a new goal. As they achieve
their goals, their self-confidence increases along with their ability to withstand peer pressure and make decisions
independently. This is crucial to childrens’ development into strong, responsible and successful human beings.
As children get older and more advanced, they have traveled a good distance down life’s correct path, developing
good character and proper moral values. At this point, we can start to shift our focus a bit more to the self-defense
aspects of their training. They have already developed a good self-defense foundation in their Kenpo training and we
will now start to integrate Boxing, Kickboxing and Jiu Jitsu techniques.

Kenpo

Kenpo is the most traditional of the arts that we teach at North Shore Kenpo Karate. Although a traditional art,
Kenpo is surprisingly practical in its self-defense applications. The Kenpo system stresses strong stances, proper
footwork and economical techniques that are not overly complicated or requiring the use of very fine motor skills.
The more fancy techniques are, the less effective they will be for self-defense purposes. Kenpo is a very well
rounded style of self-defense, offering techniques to defend against numerous types of attacks. These include
empty handed attacks such as strikes, grabs and chokes, and attacks by assailants carrying various types of weapons.
Kenpo also offers defensive techniques against multiple attackers.
Aside from self-defense techniques, Kenpo practitioners learn proper breathing and relaxation through meditation
and through the practice of forms. A form is a choreographed set of self-defense moves that are practiced without
an opponent, which helps to improve focus and concentration, as well as proper technique. Focus and concentration
is always emphasized in Kenpo no matter what type of technique is being practiced.
The training and techniques of Kenpo serve to provide a good, solid foundation on which our students can build
their self-defense skills.

Kickboxing

While Kenpo builds our students’ strong foundations in self-defense mechanics, our Boxing and Kickboxing training
is a very good complement to Kenpo for their stand-up fighting. Boxing and Kickboxing takes a more free-style
approach to stand-up fighting. It involves much simpler and effective striking, kicking and defensive techniques,
with an emphasis on balance and body positioning while fighting. Boxing and Kickboxing training also emphasizes
building one’s endurance, which is a very important element of effective self-defense.

Jiu Jitsu

It is a known fact that 80% - 90% of confrontations end up on the ground. Our Jiu Jitsu class consists
mainly of practicing a wide variety of grappling techniques in various positions to prepare our students
for ground situations. In addition to ground fighting, our Jiu Jitsu training also involves various takedowns
from a stand-up position along with many different types of joint locks and chokes. Jiu Jitsu is one of the
absolute most effective martial arts for close quarters combat.

R.E.A.C.T. Self Defense Program

We strongly believe and always encourage that the smartest decision is to avoid confrontation if at all possible.
But what if you are encountered by an aggressor? Do you know how you would react when the adrenaline starts to flow?
Our R.E.A.C.T. self-defense seminars provide the missing link between self-defense techniques practiced in a controlled
environment and self-defense in the real world. No matter how well one’s self-defense techniques work in a controlled
environment, they will likely turn up useless in an actual situation while under adrenal stress, unless they have been
practiced under adrenal stress. R.E.A.C.T. stands for Raw Energy Adrenaline Control Training. In our seminars, we
educate students in verbal and physical self-defense skills against an attacker and allow them to employ these skills
through simulated attack scenarios that leave the students overcome with adrenaline. The students are able to lash
out at full power since the attacker is heavily protected from head to toe.
We also offer these seminars to parents for their children, in the form of child abduction prevention training.
